Slave to society

Do you class yourself as a slave?

Most people would hate to think that they are a slave, but we all may fall into this category in some form or another.

We might be slaves to our work, to consumerism, to addiction, to food, to sugar, to ciggarettes, to alcohol, to shoes, to clothing, to beauty treatments, to ‘keeping up with the joneses’. The list goes on!

It’s an endless cycle. Once you get a taste, you want more.

In using the term slavery, I mean are you working to fund an addiction to things without realising it? When you buy or consume these things, often you find that the thing you crave isn’t what makes you happy.

Often in our society we equate success with money, net worth, the value of material objects, but we need to reevaluate how we measure success. Success should be measured in happiness.

A 2007 study showed that the average person sees 5,000 marketing messages per day

The figures are likely much higher these days!

Think about the last time you went out to meet a friend, and they were running late? What did you do? The answer, for most of us, is pull out our phone and scroll through Facebook. This helps us take our mind off the current situation, helps us feel connected. But alot of the way we interact online isn’t connection, it’s marketing.

How do you find your worth? How do you get out of the loop of wanting everything that’s marketed towards you when we’re constantly bombarded with the messaging that we’re not good enough?

How do you break the cycle?

At the end of the day, the answer lies within our own minds.

If you can train your mind to be more content with what you have, to be happy without all of the material objects or items we consume, we can break free.

To do this, we need to identify the areas where we are spending or consuming unneccessarily. This applies to both our business, and personal lives.

This is one area a good accountant can help.
